My name is Joel and I didn’t start out as a writer.

I was an impossibly shy kid with a dream that I was too scared to share with anybody.

I learned at an early age that I had learning disabilities—a very generic term that basically meant that my brain didn’t work as well as other kids.

As a child, when learning about this diagnosis, I had a crippling fear that I would never learn how to read or write.

I was held back in the first grade because I struggled so much in school.

I was afraid of what people would think of me. I didn’t think I was good at anything, and I would amount to much. I was convinced I would never be successful at anything.

However, thanks to some great teachers and loving, supportive parents, I was able to overcome my challenges and through nothing more than sheer hard work and will, I have become a proficient writer.

I would never claim to be a great writer.

I’m still a terrible speller and continue to mix up my letters even when I’ve spelled the word a thousand times.

But fast forward to today, and I’ve written seven fiction books and two non-fiction books. I was voted the ‘Best Author in Vancouver,’ and won a dozen other awards for my writing.  I’ve also worked with hundreds of authors developing their own books.
